San Francisco Chroniclereports faced with ever-increasing violence between police and Occupy protesters, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan is seeking help from a new source: Occupy Wall Street. Quan plans to ask leaders of the national Occupy movement to convince their Oakland cohorts to shun violence during their protests over economic inequality, officials said Monday. “This splinter group inside Occupy Oakland — the ones who advocate violence — are not in sync with the rest of the movement,” said Sue Piper, Quan’s spokeswoman. “People who have been involved with the national movement — and a lot of people who live in Oakland — are really fed up with this splinter group. This is not what Occupy is supposed to be about.”
City officials estimated that about 400 people were arrested Saturday night following protesters’ attempt to take over the vacant Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center near Lake Merritt. Three police officers and several protesters were injured in a melee that stretched across downtown.

The Blazereports We’ve covered the Catholic Church’s ongoing battle with the Obama administration over contraception health care mandates for quite some time. Over the weekend, though, the stand-off took an unusual turn, as Catholic churches across America read a letter to congregants that perfectly encapsulated the church’s stance against the impending federal requirements.
The Church’s vocal arguments against the Obama administration are centered upon a Health and Human Services Department requirement that employers must include contraception and abortion-inducing drugs in health-care coverage. While this requirement doesn’t apply to houses of worship, it will force Catholic colleges, hospitals and other Christian groups to provide these drugs despite their faith-based opposition to them.
Many of these organizations, despite not being, themselves, churches, are intrinsically rooted in religious belief systems that stand firmly opposed to medications and procedures that would terminate the life of an unborn child. These deeply-rooted moral codes, which drive the groups’ work, will be impeded, Catholic leaders say, should the Obama administration continue with its planned mandate.

General Jackson believes they could still fall to a surprise attack.
"The official answer will be that it would not be possible for the Argentinians to gain a foothold on the islands, in particular to take Mount Pleasant, which is key to the British defence plan.
Defences on the Falklands are now – by a factor of several tens – better than they were in 1982.
We have a large international-sized airfield to allow for very rapid reinforcement by air, should circumstances so require.

The original invasion was "a strategic shock" that surprised defence chiefs, says General Jackson, who worked for the head of military intelligence in Whitehall during the Falklands War.
"There was a small amount of intelligence – which was gold – from the British naval attache in Buenos Aires, who was clearly watching with great care, and no doubt listening to this and that conversation and he said, 'Look, these people are up to something.' Basically, that was discounted in London."

Nearly sixteen years after the murder of Newport Beach multimillionaire Bill McLaughlin , police have charged two suspects - McLaughlin's ex-girlfriend and her former lover, a former NFL linebacker.
Both Nanette Packard McNeal and Eric Naposki, who played with the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots, are awaiting trial after pleading not guilty at last year's preliminary hearing, reports KTLA.

When the Rev. Bob Brashear prepared for Sunday services at West Park Presbyterian Church on West 86th Street, he noticed parts of the bronze baptismal font were gone.
In a fire-and-brimstone message to occupiers later that day, he thundered, “It was like pissing on the 99 percent.”
In Brooklyn, at another church housing OWS protesters, an occupier urinated on a cross, according to Rabbi Chaim Gruber, who has angrily abandoned the OWS movement.
In a letter last week to OWS obtained by The Post, the rabbi fumed, “The Park Slope church housing occupiers was desecrated when an occupier peed inside the building and the pee came into contact with a cross.”
The pastor of the church did not return calls.

PepsiCo, the drink's manufacturer, is being sued by Ronald Ball of Wisconsin, who claims in a 2009 lawsuit that he opened a can from a vending machine, tasted something foul, and spat out a dead mouse, acccording to MadisonRecord.com.
Ball, who is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, claims he then sent the mouse to Pepsi, which destroyed the mouse's body.
However, Pepsi is now moving to dismiss the case, citing testimony from an expert who claims that acid used when the drink is bottled would have caused the rodent to transform into a "jelly-like' substance," according to LegalNewsline.com.

New York Postreports a foulmouthed teacher got her butt fired after she told a group of ninth-graders “they had their brains in their ass,” then tried to bribe a student to save her hide, officials said.
The city Department of Education accused Bernadette Camacho, 39, of verbally abusing social-studies students at Hillcrest HS in Queens, according to investigation documents The Post obtained through a Freedom of Information request.
But during the hearings that would decide her fate, the teacher tried to coerce a flunking female student to sing her praises in court in exchange for a passing grade, officials said.
The plan backfired.
The student told her mother, who in turn informed Camacho that if the teacher didn’t stop pressuring her daughter with cellphone calls, she would alert police.
Camacho approached the girl at school and told her, “Thank you for making my life worse,” according to a probe by schools investigator Richard Condon.
Condon found that Camacho called the student five times, including on March 20 at 6:44 p.m., the night before a pre-hearing conference on the disciplinary charges the teacher faced.

Michigan Capital confidentialreports aach Chevy Volt sold thus far may have as much as $250,000 in state and federal dollars in incentives behind it – a total of $3 billion altogether, according to an analysis by James Hohman, assistant director of fiscal policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.
Hohman looked at total state and federal assistance offered for the development and production of the Chevy Volt, General Motors’ plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. His analysis included 18 government deals that included loans, rebates, grants and tax credits. The amount of government assistance does not include the fact that General Motors is currently 26 percent owned by the federal government.
