Great Expectations starring little know actor Douglas Booth huge rating hit BBC

Dickens is one of my favorite writers and I’m jealous I can’t see this production in the United States at this time. I hope some of my UK readers would chime in with their comments on the series.

UK Telegraph reports a little-known British actor has blown all expectations out of the water and helped the BBC attract more than six million viewers to a star-studded adaptation of a Dickens classic.

Douglas Booth, 19, took centre-stage in the remake of Great Expectations as a teenage Pip in the three-part series and immediately won a legion of admirers.

Booth's performance, along with Ray Winstone and Gillian Anderson, helped the broadcaster to more than a quarter of the share of viewers on Tuesday night in the dramatization of the novel about an upwardly mobile young man blinkered by snobbery.

It went head-to-head in the prime-time 9pm slot with ITV's drama Fast Freddie, The Widow and Me, which drew just under four million viewers, rising to 4.1 million with ITV1+1.
